The Sons of The American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization comprised of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the United States military and became eligible for membership in The American Legion.
Riders promote the aims and purposes of The American Legion as a family-oriented motorcycling activity for members of the Legion, the Auxiliary, and the Sons
The vision of the Auxiliary is to support The American Legion while becoming the premier service organization and foundation of every community providing support for our veterans, our military, and their families by shaping a positive future in an atmosphere of fellowship, patriotism, peace and security.
In 2013, a group of Post 47 veterans identified unmet needs for food distribution, as well as for adequate health care and benefits for our local veterans. These veterans at Post 47 devised a program to bring food to small towns in the tri-county area (Stevens, Ferry, Pend Oreille). We distribute food for in-home consumption, and provide a hot lunch for the entire community. As our guests sign in at events, veterans are identified and asked to speak with a Veteran’s Service Officer that day. Our Service Officer initiates new VA claims and answers important questions from veterans’ families. As of July 2019 this program initiated over 200 benefit claims for veterans and their families.
In conjunction with the VA, thousands of veterans have been provided with a broad range of necessities including food, clothing, medical, legal and mental health assistance, job counseling and referral, and most importantly, companionship and camaraderie. A hot meal is provided on the day of these events.
To honor our nation’s flag and promote the American Legion’s commitment to the memory of our country’s POWs and MIAs, the Riders of Post 47 manage a program to fabricate and erect flag poles in prominent locations throughout the tri-county area. With materials donated by Tri-Works, a layout and fabrication business in Colville, the Legion Riders, with the help of the local community “Get the Job Done”. Each pole is dedicated in the name of a local Veteran, with a plaque at a special installation ceremony.
This is for the remembrance of service members captured or missing in action in service of our country. The Riders work with local restaurant owners who proudly allow ceremonial tables at their restaurants.
Post 47 Members and Legion Riders provide an honor guard at veteran funerals and other notable services throughout the year. When requested by a veteran’s family, we humbly provide military honors with a rifle salute. Each year on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, VFW Post 6963 of Colville provides a flag folding ceremony, while Post 47’s Honor Guard provides the rifle team to present full military honors.
